For customers looking for added flexibility when powering radio equipment at the top of cell towers, OmniOn Power has expanded its proven, reliable Infinity product family with new NE070DC58AZ DC/DC converters. These latest additions to the Infinity-series product family boost and regulate the nominal -48-volt (V) DC plant voltage commonly provided by an Infinity S or Infinity M power system to -58VDC.
The -58VDC is provided to an integrated, common system bus structure and is then deployed to loads through pluggable DC breakers, which provide overcurrent protection. The boosted voltage provides greater reach and reduces current flow in cables, which, in turn, decreases heat loss and improves overall system efficiency. The converters can be connected in parallel for larger loads and can be configured with N+1 redundancy, enhancing system reliability and helping to improve remote radio head uptime.
“In critical infrastructure such as wireless networks, uptime and reliability are essential. It’s part of the reason redundancy is built into telecom power systems. When network infrastructure switches to battery backup, during discharge, the battery voltage can drop below the standard operating voltage of the power system. This can result in power to the remote radio head falling below minimum operating voltages, which in turn can lead to the units shutting down,” said Raj Radjassamy, director, 5G and wireless segment for OmniOn Power. “Our reliable Infinity power systems equipped with the new DC/DC converters can help maintain a constant voltage output to the remote radio heads in the event that the power system switches to battery power – enabling increased uptime and helping to extend the amount of time a remote radio head can continue to operate when the system is on discharge.”
The medium-voltage Infinity DC power systems can be configured in rack- or cabinet-mounted solutions to help support 5G and wireless infrastructure expansion. Boost converter slots and associated load circuits can be integrated into the Infinity power plants during the build process for new equipment, or dual voltage systems already deployed in the field can be converted to support the -58V boost capability, providing flexibility for customers depending on their existing power infrastructure and future needs.
For customers with Infinity power systems already deployed at their cell sites, integrating the new converters into their existing infrastructure can help reduce capital expenses required for 5G deployments and network expansion. It also can help eliminate the need to boost plants at the base of a radio tower, reducing power footprints as well as system and installation costs.
The converters are designed to easily plug into existing slots within the latest generation of Infinity power systems, simplifying field upgrades and streamlining maintenance. Older systems can be retrofitted with supplemental shelves to support the NE070 converter if desired.
